The eastern suburbs community is rallying around a Kilsyth junior footballer following a Christmas Day accident which left him unable to walk.

A crowd-funding campaign has been launched in support of 16-year-old Wyatt Bignell, after a December 25 incident landed him in the ICU.

The GoFundMe page, set up by Wyatt’s cousin Auburn Walden, has raised almost $3000 of its $12,000 target and aims to “support Wyatt’s transition from ICU, rehabilitation and beyond,” the page’s description read.

Walden wrote on the page that the “situation is life-changing for him”.

“He is currently in the very early stages of navigating healing.

“His direct family are now with him around the clock, supporting him during this next chapter of life, day by day.

“As people close to the family will know, Wyatt plays for the Kilsyth Cougars, and is a keen sportsman, musician and student. This situation is life-changing for him.”

In a Facebook post, Kilsyth Junior Football Club said: “Please support junior player Wyatt Bignell and his family as they recover from a tragic Christmas Day accident. We pray for the absolute best for this family in this tough time.”

It’s hoped the funds raised will alleviate “the burden of financial stress” for the Bignell family, consisting of mother Elizabeth, father Wayne and younger sister Gwen.

“Whilst navigating this change, we have set up this GoFundMe page with permission from his parents, in order to hopefully take the burden of financial stress such as household bills, medical bills, hospital expenses and Wyatt’s needs, so they can focus on what is most important,” the page read.
