There are serious doubts over the 2020 MPNFL season after Chelsea withdrew its senior football teams tonight.
The Seagulls advised AFL South East chief operating officer Shaun Connell of their decision to withdraw their football department immediately — including seniors, reserves and under 19s.
It’s understood MPNFL club presidents agreed last month that if at least two clubs felt they’d be under financial stress, the whole season would be called off.
Chelsea president Michael Davis said it was a tough decision for his club to pull out, but the club’s best interests were at heart.
“The decision to withdraw from the season has not been taken lightly, but we believe it is in the best interest of the club and our members,” Davis said.
“With over 110 years of history we need to ensure that we are here for our members for many more years to come.
“Our resolve for success will only become greater as we begin to plan for season 2021.’’
It’s understood Davis voiced his club’s concerns over its viability due to the coronavirus crisis at a recent MPNFL presidents’ meeting, declaring his club was against a season going ahead.
Financial concerns, waning player interest and uncertainty of what a 2020 season would look like as far as crowds go are believed to be factors in Chelsea’s decision.
Despite Chelsea’s withdrawal, Connell said AFLSE would continue to work with MPNFL clubs on options for a possible start to the season.
“We fully respect the right of the Chelsea Football Netball Club committee to make considered decisions based on what it feels is right for its members, and its short and long term sustainability,” Connell said.
“And while we fully respect that decision, we will continue to work with the remainder of MPNFL and AFL South East clubs...’’
MPNFL clubs will convene following the announcement from the State Premier on June 21to consider their position.
