Country footy heavyweights Goulburn Valley and Ovens and Murray went head-to-head, Keilor raises the bar and a number of winnings streaks came to a crashing halt.

It’s been another big weekend in local footy.

The showpiece inter-league clash between country heavyweights Goulburn Valley and Ovens and Murray didn’t disappoint.

Meanwhile, in metro local footy, Keilor continues to assert its dominance as the best the game has to offer.

A number of undefeated seasons came to a crashing halt but several more survived big scores to march on.

GOULBURN VALLEY ENDS INTER-LEAGUE DROUGHT

For the first time in 14 years, Goulburn Valley has claimed inter-league bragging rights over its country footy rival Ovens and Murray.

The GV overcame overcome a slow start to claim the Ash-Wilson Trophy with an impressive 15-point victory at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.

The O&M led by as much as 28 points when it kicked the first two goals of the second quarter before collapsing, kicking just two goals for the rest of the match.

Goulburn Valley were 0.4 at quarter-time but found its rhythm in the second half to triumph 8.15 (63) to 7.6 (48).

Mansfield’s Collingwood VFL-listed star Harry Mahoney was named best-on-ground in the victory, while Kyabram’s Anthony Depasquale booted a match-high three goals.

O&M coach Damian Sexton was blunt in his assessment.

“GV were hungrier and as they day went on they got better at it,” he told the league’s social media.

In the day’s other games, Goulburn Valley also claimed the senior netball, 45-40 with Euroa’s Kellie Davidson named best-on-court.

Ovens and Murray came away with wins in the under-18 football and under-17 netball, by 28 points and 20 goals respectively.

Max Bihun was judged best-on-ground in the football, while Molly Moylan was best-on-court in the netball.

KEILOR THE BEST TEAM IN MELBOURNE?

Undefeated EDFL Premier Division champions last season and unbeaten so far this year, Keilor took its game to a completely new level on Saturday with a mammoth 184-point win over East Keilor. The Blues booted a ridiculous 11 goals straight in a dynamic first quarter to take a 47-point lead. They finished with another 11 goals in the last quarter, finishing 35.12 (222) to 5.8 (38) winners. Harrison Kennedy booted seven goals, while former Richmond and Gold Coast star Corey Ellis ran rampant.

BRIGHTON RECORD SURVIVES BIG SCARE

Old Brighton remains undefeated on top of the VAFA Premier Division ladder but not before a massive scare from St Bernard’s at College Oval. The Snowdogs led by two points at half-time before Old Brighton took control, holding the hosts to a single behind in the third quarter to jump out to a seven-point advantage. In a pulsating final quarter, Brighton almost threw the game away with a wayward 2.7 as St Bernard’s kicked 3.4 to fall short 8.22 (70) to 9.11 (65). Harry Hill and Hamish Dick led the ladder-leaders home, while Cam Hathway booted three goals.

MITCHAM’S TIMELY REMINDER

Heading into Saturday’s clash at Holm Park, Beaconsfield was cruising in second and reigning EFNL Division 1 premier Mitcham was battling injuries in fourth. The Tigers sent a reminder to the competition of its power with a 70-point thrashing of its top-four rival. After an even first half, the hosts were held goalless in the second as Mitcham powered away to a 13.11 (89) to 2.7 (19) triumph. Riley Nicholas and Nick Hallo were superb, while skipper Jesse Uren booted three goals for the victors. Sam Merrick was Beacy’s best in defeat.

EAGLES FLY HOME

Whittlesea is the last undefeated team in NFNL Division 2 after taking down Diamond Creek by 15 points in Saturday’s top-of-the-table blockbuster at Whittlesea Showgrounds. The home side turned a six-point half-time deficit into a 12.15 (87) to 11.6 (72) victory, holding the previously red-hot Creekers to just two goals in the second half. Eagles leader Matthew Atta was best afield in victory, while Taidhg Bland continued his outstanding start to the season.

BEENA GOOD DAY

Murrumbeena took down East Malvern in the battle of Division 2’s unblemished sides. It was the young guns who impressed for the Lions, with under-19 Blake Meadows proving his five-goal haul on debut last week wasn’t a fluke and Lachlan English kicking a sensational goal on the burst through a stoppage. Ex-Richmond forward Todd Elton got his hands to a lot of the ball but was followed closely all day. The Panthers were without star forward Isaac Morrisby, who has kicked 28 goals in six games, through tonsillitis.

DOGS JUMP INTO FINALS CALCULATIONS

Point Cook has launched itself into the Western Division 1 finals conversation with an impressive 24-point win over Caroline Springs. The Bulldogs led from start to finish, triumphing 13.8 (86) to 7.20 (62). The visitors left to rue inaccuracy, having six more scoring shots on the day. Michael Cilmi was best afield for Point Cook, booting five goals, while Lochlan Allen also impressed. Mitch Bongiovanni was Caroline Springs’ best.

ANOTHER BAG FOR METRO’S LEADING GOALKICKER

Former AFL star Mitch Brown continued his dominant form in front of the big sticks to lead Parkdale Vultures to a dominant 79-point victory over Mazenod in VAFA Premier C. Brown booted seven goals and likely could have had a few more in the 14.23 (107) to 3.10 (28) victory. The haul backs up his massive 14 majors last week against Monash Blues, while he booted 10 against Marcellin and nine against Glen Eira, taking his tally to 44 in six outings this season.

DYNAMIC DEVON

Devon Meadows stamped itself as legitimate MPFNL Division 2 contenders after ending ladder-leader Chelsea’s unbeaten run with a 53-point win. The Panthers kicked eight first-half goals to hurry to a 40-point lead and capped the display with six goals in the last quarter to win 15.10 (100) to 6.11 (47), improving their record to 7-1.

HAWKS CATCH TURTLES

Heidelberg West has shocked the NFNL Division 3 with a stunning three-point upset win over Old Eltham Collegians. The 8.10 (58) to 7.13 (55) victory is the Hawks’ third of the campaign and puts an end to the Turtles’ undefeated season. West led from the get-go and held their nerve in a nail-biting final quarter as Collegians threw everything bar the kitchen sink but will rue inaccuracy, kicking 2.5. Jordan Bulman booted three goals for the victors, while Jeremy Murphy was best in defeat.

BURRAS END BOMBERS RUN

Reigning RDFNL premier Diggers Rest reasserted its authority on the competition with a thrilling eight-point win over premiership rival Riddell at Bloomdale Oval. The 8.6 (54) to 6.10 (46) triumph puts an end to the Bombers undefeated start to the season. In a see-sawing contest, Riddell led at every change but couldn’t hold on in a heart-stopping finish. Hayden Davis and Ben McMahon starred for Diggers, while Jesse Horton was Riddell’s best.

TERRIFIC TITANS

Berwick Springs held its nerve to secure a first win in Outer East Premier Division, edging Olinda Ferny Creek by three points. The Titans trailed by four points at the final change but kicked the only two goals of the last quarter to prevail 6.6 (42) to 4.15 (39). Kayden Buselli’s three goals were vital, while Michael Misso, Matt Soutter-Smith, Cameron Miller and Riley Hillman also had a big day in the stirring victory.

KANGAS CLICK

A youthful Langwarrin outfit has claimed a stirring upset win and climbed off the bottom of the MPFNL Division 1 ladder with a sizzling 51-point win over Frankston YCW at John Coburn Oval. Langy stunned the Stonecats with a nine-goal first-half blitz before running away with it, 14.11 (95) to 6.7 (44). Matthew Peynenborg was brilliant with six goals and 18-year-old debutant Kylan Mitchell slotted two, while the Kangaroos also found inspiration from ball magnet Zach Andrewartha, Collingwood VFL-listed Chad Mulvogue and whole-hearted ruckman Matthew Naughton.

ROSELLAS REMAIN PERFECT

Cheltenham continued its undefeated start in SFNL Division 1 and extended its lead at the top of the table with a 26-point win over second-placed Springvale Districts. The Rosellas’ 16.6 (102) to 11.10 (76) victory moves them a win clear on top. Districts had no answers at Springvale Reserve as Cheltenham led at every change. Daniel Vaughan and Sam Dunell (five goals) were prolific for the winners, while Darcy Warke was best in defeat.
