LLOYD’S BLOODS ROAR TO PREMIERSHIP

Haileybury has completed a stunning comeback victory to secure the Associated Public Schools premiership over Caulfield Grammar.

The Matthew Lloyd-led Bloods fell behind by as five goals late in the third term before a pair of quick majors injected life back into the contest.

Haileybury, which still trailed by 18 points at the last change, then fired off five unanswered goals in the final stanza to snatch victory from the clutches of defeat, 8.9 (57) to 7.7 (49).

Mitch Kirkwood-Scott put the home side in front with a mesmerising kick from the junction of the 50m arc and the boundary line before Liam George (three goals) put the icing on the cake.

Top Caulfield prospect Nick Watson was imperious for the first three terms – kicking a major in each to go with a stack of possessions – but was relatively quiet in the final quarter.

The triumph is Haileybury’s fourth APS premiership in six seasons.

STILL NO CENTURY

The wait for the season’s first 100-goalkicker continues. Alvie spearhead Dominic Dare needed just four goals to bring up the ton but could only manage three in his team’s 15-point triumph over Birregurra in the Colac District league. Dare joins Brandyn Grenfell on 99 after the Marong star had the bye this weekend. Meanwhile, Mitta United’s Ethan Redcliffe booted four to take his season tally to 96 and while Strathmerton’s Tim Looby was held to just one major, taking his tally to 83.

BROOKERS ON THE BOARD

Braybrook has broken its losing streak to finally open its WRFL Division 2 account. The Brookers were too good for North Footscray at Pennell Reserve, recording a much-needed 18-point triumph. The 12.8 (80) to 7.20 (62) result also revives the club’s survival hopes, moving within a game of the Demons in the relegation battle. Anthony Fattore was named best-on-ground, while Rhys Mutch and Callum O’Rafferty impressed and Jayden Hoskin-Elliott booted three goals.

HILLMEN STUN PREMIER

Red Hill had just 21 points on the board and trailed reigning MPFNL premier Frankston YCW by 35 points at three-quarter-time. Cue a stunning comeback at Red Hill Reserve. The home team piled on six goals to nil in a stunning final quarter onslaught to snatch a dramatic one-point victory. The club’s Facebook page summed it up “defence, offence and midfield collectively fought back producing a thrilling win with a final score of 61-60 — with the winning goal kicked with 20 seconds to go”. Brenton Credlin was named best afield for the victors with Kevin Lylak and Bassirou Faye also impressive, skipper Blake Mullane, Luca Goonan and Matt Troutbeck all booted two goals.

CREEKERS ON TOP

In front of a bumper crowd at Coventry Oval, Diamond Creek showcased its defensive power in a 21-point win over Eltham. In a NFNL Division 2 top-of-the-table clash, the Creekers held the second-placed Panthers goalless in the first quarter and to six majors of the match. Despite having his nose broken in the opening minutes, Joel Randle, together with the likes of Billy Bedford, Brenton Keating, Matt Lewis and Nathan Searl were imperious. Back from Footscray VFL duties, Ewen Macpherson was impressive, while Nick Barro, Mitch Tobin and Dale Marshall were also prolific.

DOGGIES SPOIL OSBORNE’S PARTY

St Paul’s McKinnon has spoiled Cranbourne’s celebration of champion defender Glenn Osborne. Osborne, playing in his 200th match, was unable to celebrate with a win, as the travelling Bulldogs pinched a 10.7 (67) to 9.7 (61) victory. The Dogs kicked four goals to nil in the third quarter to return from a 20-point half-time margin. The loss is the Eagles’ second in as many weeks. The result has enormous ramifications on the SFNL Division 1 top-five, with Springvale Districts – which beat Bentleigh – now in second position.

BOMBERS WIN GF REMATCH, END BURRA’S STREAK

Diggers Rest’s bid for a perfect season is over after going down to reigning Riddell District premier Riddell. The Bombers did it in style too, winning by 57 points at Bloomdale Oval. Dylan Tarczon booted three goals and Jesse Horton was named best-afield in the 12.18 (90) to 6.7 (43) triumph that puts the Bombers in the hunt for the double chance. Elsewhere, Woodend-Hesket won a thriller against Romsey, holding on for a nail-biting one-point win, 14.11 (95) to 14.10 (94) at Gilbert Gordon Oval.

DEVILS JUMP UP

It’s a tight race for second in the Ballarat league and Darley poked its nose in front with a massive 111-point win over Lake Wendouree. The Devils jumped ahead of Sebastopol on percentage, despite the Burras recording a 22-point win over fourth-placed North Ballarat. Ex-AFL star and Darley skipper Brett Bewley booted four goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Matt Denham and Shane Page were also important. Meanwhile, at Marty Busch Reserve, Sebas trailed by a point at three-quarter-time before roaring home with four goals to none. Jack Riding was best-on-ground, Isaac Lovison and Brock Leonard impressed and Sam Glover booted three goals in the 12.13 (85) to 9.9 (63) triumph.

STORM COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

Strathfieldsaye trailed by 45 points at quarter-time in its Bendigo league top-five clash with Eaglehawk at Canterbury Park. A six-goal second term reduced the margin to 26 points at half-time and the gap had narrowed to 23 at the final change as a stunning comeback loomed. However, despite holding Eaglehawk goalless in the final term, it proved too big a leap to make as the home team held on by 14 points. The Eagles cement themselves in third place on the ladder, while Strathfieldsaye sits fifth now just a game ahead of Kyneton, which knocked off Gisborne in a thriller by three points.
