Castlemaine recruit Coby Perry will have to wait another 12 months before making his debut.
The former Maryborough captain, who joined the club in the off-season after the Magpies went into recess, has been ruled out of the upcoming season after suffering a serious injury recently.
“He’s done his wrist and he had to have surgery,” Castlemaine coach Michael Hartley said.
“He’s definitely not playing this year.”
The news comes as a major blow for Perry and Castlemaine.
The midfielder was part of the Maryborough who lost 62 straight games.
The move was an opportunity for Perry to play and provide Castlemaine with a good chance of making finals.
“We were pretty excited to get someone of his talent and leadership,” Hartley said.
“It would have been good for him, I didn’t want him to worry about anything off-field, I just wanted him to come out and have a good time with the boys and have a kick around.
“For himself, long-term, footy isn’t everything, so we wanted him to look after his body.”
Hartley said it would now provide an opportunity for Matthew Filo to step in and take his role.
“He’s coming back full time for us,” he said.
“In terms of that guy who can get in and under and be pretty physical he’ll hopefully do that role for us.
“Hopefully there’s others who can step up and do good things for us.”
Castlemaine starts its season on Saturday against the reigning premiers Sandhurst.
