Casey Scorpions set to drop name and jumper and tighten links with Melbourne Demons

THE Casey Scorpions are poised to change their name and jumper next year as they move towards a long-term alignment with AFL club Melbourne.

In 2017 the Scorpions are likely to operate only as Casey and wear the Melbourne guernsey.

It’s part of a plan for the club to become known as the Casey Demons.

The Casey-Melbourne VFL alignment finishes at the end of 2018, but the clubs are working towards creating a new entity and a football hub for the southeast based at Casey Fields.

It would involve the fast-growing women’s football and the Academy programs initiated by the AFL.

The Scorpions believe the rebranding and their ability to tap into Melbourne’s resources would allow them to generate more sponsorship and marking opportunities, exposure and general support.

It would also increase Melbourne’s connection to the southeast, which started in 2009 with a 30-year deal with the City of Casey which, according to the council, “focuses on five key pillars: education, multicultural, women, business and grassroots football’’.

Leader understands AFL Victoria has endorsed the clubs’ proposal.

Formerly known as Springvale, the Scorpions moved to Casey Fields in 2006 while aligned to St Kilda.

When the Saints switched to Sandringham, Casey established an alliance with Melbourne in 2008.

The Scorpions are keen for any arrangement to recognise their history and the new jumper will continue to carry the initials of SFC (Springvale Football Club).

The make-up of a board and staff will be negotiated.

The Scorpions finished 2016 as minor premiers and reached the VFL grand final.
