MOBBED by fans desperate for a photo with the AFL games record holder, Brent Harvey had little time to soak up North Heidelberg’s premiership success in the immediate aftermath.

The 39-year-old was a major drawcard at Preston City Oval on Saturday as blue and white North Melbourne jumpers mixed with blue, red and white of North Heidelberg to cheer on the Kangaroos legend.

Harvey’s brilliance was on full display late in the first half when he baulked two opponents, leaving them in his wake and dishing off a handball to Jackson Jones, who put the Dogs 44 points clear.

He finished with two goals and was efficient in midfield as North Heidelberg dominated from start to finish in a 19.15 (129) to 7.10 (52) victory over Diamond Creek.

“When I first came back to local footy, I obviously wanted to play with (younger brother) Shane,” Harvey said.

“Then (cousin) Blair came across as well, it was awesome. We set out really early try to win a premiership.

“We thought we were the best team in the competition.

“To share that moment with my brother, cousin and the rest of the boys, it was pretty cool.”

Shane finished the season with 115 goals from 17 matches after booting five in the decider. Blair, who captained Heidelberg to four premierships between 2004 and 2009, crossed to the Dogs this season to play with his cousins.

“That was the plan all along when I first signed with them,” Brent said.

“To come and play with Shane obviously but to build a culture, try and play some good footy and get them back into Divi 1 where they belong.

“They are a pretty proud club with a good culture and a long history, so for us to do that, we are back in Divi 1 now … I want to celebrate tonight and for the next couple of nights.

“But it’s going to be pretty tough again next year to compete in Divi 1.”

Harvey heaped praise on teammate Jesse Tardio, who for the second time was named best on ground in a North Heidelberg premiership, repeating his heroics from 2014.

“To perform the way he has, not only today but the way he has performed during the finals and during the season as well, he’s a bloody good player,” he said.

“He makes my job easier.”

Harvey said he was satisfied to have helped deliver North Heidelberg its second premiership in four seasons.

“They lost last year. I wasn’t a part of that, Blair wasn’t a part of that and there was a few other (new) boys.

“There was 10-12 players that were a part of that and the feeling, they said they never wanted to experience that again.”

Harvey has already indicated he will play on next year, keen to ensure the Dogs consolidate themselves as a Division 1 club.
