All the key talking points from Saturday’s local footy action

From decade long firsts and the end of streaks to big performances from ex-AFL players, local footy delivered once again across the state. Here are 20 things we learned.

Another exciting round of local footy has come to an end across Victoria.

Here are some of the major things we learned from the day’s action.

LIONS TAME PARROTS

Moe has ended the longest streak in Victorian football with a 27-point win over Leongatha.

Leongatha had not been beaten since April 18, 2021, culminating in last year’s premiership win.

The Parrots had won 34 straight matches but the Lions spoiled the party on Saturday.

The Lions took control of the game in the second half to kick four goals to one and lead by 21 points.

The Lions were never headed after, winning 12. 5 (77) to 6. 14 (50).

AFL NAMES LIGHT UP BONBEACH COMEBACK

Bonbeach has tasted its first victory of the MPFNL Division 1 season with a stirring eight-point win over Sorrento.

Bonny trailed by 14 points at the last break before kicking seven goals to four in the final quarter to triumph 16.12 (108) to 16.4 (100).

Former AFL Swan and Saint Trent Dennis-Lane was the star of the match for the winners, finishing with five goals, while former Melbourne listed Liam Hulett and Jet Peckett, son of St Kilda champion Justin Peckett, were also influential.

NEW EDFL RULES TRIALLED AS ST ALBANS RESPOND

After being in the headlines for the wrong reasons across the past week, St Albans responded in the best possible way with a thrilling four-point win over Rupertswood on Saturday afternoon.

They came from behind to defeat the Sharks in rollercoaster Essendon District league Division 1 clash.

Bryson Scales was named best afield as Victor Micallef booted three.

The day also saw new rules, stopping spectators from attending huddles in place for the first time.

EPPING GETS ROLLING

Epping is on the board for the first time in 2023 after recording a big 43-point victory over Lower Plenty.

The Pingers led at every break to run away with a comfortable 15.13 (103) to 9.6 (60) win.

BROOKERS BANK BIG SCALP

Gembrook Cockatoo has claimed its best Outer East Premier Division victory to date with a stunning win over competition powerhouse Woori Yallock.

The Brookers, last year‘s Division One premiers, defeated the Tigers 10.11 (71) to 8.16 (64).

Narre Warren, meanwhile, recorded a big win over Olinda Ferny Creek, 26.14 (170) to 3.7 (25). Young Magpie full forward Will Howe booted 11 goals.

Monbulk and Wandin also notched wins in the other matches.

LEWIS STARS IN COUNTRY WIN

Former Hawthorn and Melbourne player Jordan Lewis has starred for Buchan as the Omeo District league club defeated Lindenow South by 37 points.

The four-time premiership player, as part of the Carlton Draft, kicked two goals as his team outlasted their rivals by kicking away in the final term.

The 12.8 (80) to 5.13 (43) win was the first time Buchan had beaten Lindenow South this season after the Swampies won by 57 points in their round three clash.

UNBEATEN BENDIGO RUN OVER

Kangaroo Flat has produced one of the shocks of the Bendigo league season so far, beating the previously unbeaten Eaglehawk by three points.

A final term charge from the Kangaroos saw them kick five goals to two to overturn a 12-point deficit at three-quarter-time to win for the first time in seven years against Eaglehawk.

Harry Whitty kicked four goals in the win.

Meanwhile the task for Gisborne to win back-to-back premierships just got tougher after the Bulldogs lost by 50 points to Golden Square.

INVERLEIGH FLEXES IT MUSCLE

Inverleigh showed why it can’t be taken lightly in the Geelong and District league with a powerful 83-point over Werribee Centrals.

The Hawks booted nine goals in the final term to pile the pain on the young Centurions outfit.

MOVES MADE IN EASTERN’S TOP-FLIGHT

Vermont has jumped into the Eastern league Premier Division top four following a 34-point win over reigning premier Noble Park. The result marks a fourth consecutive victory for the Eagles after a 91-point mauling to East Ringwood a month ago.

Meanwhile, Rowville has powered to a 57-point win over third-placed Doncaster East to keep in touch with the Premier Division‘s top four. The Hawks turned a 16-point advantage at the main break into a matchwinning 36-point lead by the final change after a five-goal-to-two third term.

Berwick has held off a fast-finishing South Croydon to record a four-point upset win. The Wickers led by 21 points at three-quarter time before the Bulldogs threatened with 3.6 to 1.1 in the final term. It‘s Berwick’s second win of the season from seven starts, drawing level with South Croydon.

FITZROY LAYS DOWN ITS PREMIERSHIP MARKER

Fitzroy has laid down a marker as the team to beat in the VAFA’s Premier B competition.

Against Beaumaris, they recorded a statement 15.14 (104) to 9.8 (62) victory at Brunswick St Oval.

Ted Clayton kicked five goals in a best on ground performance.

DOGS FIND THEIR BITE

St Paul’s McKinnon surged into Division 1 the top four with a plucky win over Port Melbourne Colts.

Jason Heffernan‘s men made difficult work of the win in the end, with 12 more scoring shots but only winning by two goals, 8.20 (68) to 8.12 (60).

Stephen Muller and Brad Dolan kicked a pair of goals each for the Bulldogs while Matthew O‘Brien was named best afield.

Elsewhere in Division 1, Cheltenham defeated Mordialloc, Cranbourne defeated Springvale Districts, Dingley defeated Chelsea Heights and Bentleigh defeated St Kilda City.

NO UNBEATEN TEAMS LEFT IN THE OVENS AND MURRAY LEAGUE

Wodonga’s standing as the only undefeated team in the Ovens and Murray league is over after they were stunned by Wangaratta Rovers by 42 points.

The win ends a two-game slide for the Hawks with Michael Clark, Cody Schutt and Thomas Boyd named among the best.

FIRST WIN FOR BLOODS

Tocumwal has won its first match in the Murray league in more than a decade.

Tocumwal smashed the winless Rumbalara by 69 points to claim their first win in the competition since returning from the Picola District league in the off-season.

The club previously played in the Murray league until 2013.

The contest was over at halftime as the Bloods kicked 10 goals to zero to get on top and lead by 61 points.

Tocumwal captain Mitch Collins Bye kicked five goals in the win, which now sees Rumbalara extend their winless streak in the competition to 27 matches.

PEGS SAVE THEIR UNBEATEN RUN

PEGS unbeaten run has stretched to 19 games but only just after overcoming a 25-point three-quarter-time deficit to secure a share of the spoils with Old Carey.

The VAFA Premier C ladder leader booted five goals to one in the final term to earn their two points.

Old Carey’s Lachlan Godden was the leading goal scorer on the ground with four.

It was Old Carey’s second draw in three weeks.

HISTORY FOR SOUTH MORNINGTON

In the Southern Football Netball League, South Mornington moved to 6-0 in Division 4 with a thumping 236-point win over South Yarra, 40.17 (257) to 3.3 (21).

Anthony Giuliano kicked 12 goals and Trav French 11. It was both the highest score and biggest winning margin in the Tigers’ history. Jason Akermanis plays for South Mornington next round.

BLOODS RUN OVER

Terang Mortlake lost for the first time this season in the Hampden league with Warrnambool too strong for the Bloods.

A four-goal haul to Blues forward Luke Cody saw his team beat the Bloods 11. 13 (79) to 8. 13 (61).

Meanwhile Port Fairy and Cobden have played out the first draw in the competition this season, being level at 98 points each when the final siren sounded.

Five goals to key Seagulls forward Jason Rowan wasn’t enough for his team.

WESTERN REGION LEAGUE SHOCK

Sunshine Heights has stunned Division 3 of the Western Region league with a 23-point victory over premiership favourite, the Suns.

The Dragons took control of the contest in the second half, kicking eight goals to four after the main break.

Kyall Parker continued his brilliant form for the season with eight majors.

EDFL BOILOVER

Airport West has won its biggest game in several years with a thrilling 35-point win over last year’s Essendon District league grand finalists Aberfeldie.

The Eagles led at every break to record the 16.12 (108) to 11.7 (73) win.

DEMONS ON TOP

Former Adelaide and Carlton player Sam Kerridge has kicked three goals as Mildura ended Robinvale Euston‘s unbeaten run in the Sunraysia Football League.

The Demons won their third straight match with a 30-point win, 13.12 (90) to 8.12 (60) to move to second on the ladder.

DAY OUT FOR HORAN

Woorndoo/Mortlake‘s Jesse Horan kicked 18 goals n the Mininera league as his team smashed Moyston Willaura by 239 points.

Horan, who has played for the club for the past three seasons, has never kicked more than 10 goals in a game for the club until Saturday.

KYABRAM WINS A THRILLER

Seymour has its first loss of the Goulburn Valley league season after Kyabram held on for a thrilling one-point win on Saturday afternoon.

Will Golds booted three goals in a best on ground display as the Bombers underlined their premiership credentials.
