AFL Yarra Ranges: Yarra Junction’s finals momentum sweeps Seville from the park in grand final

Yarra Junction proved that momentum is everything when it hammered Seville by 96 points to win an AFL Yarra Ranges Division 2 grand final whitewash at Healesville on Sunday.

Though Seville finished the home-and-away season a game clear at the top as the minor premier, with Yarra Junction four games further back in third, the Eagles had been on a roll for more than a month and entered the post-season with a head of steam.

After taking out Yarra Glen by 47 points in the qualifying final, the Eagles booked a place in the season decider with a 31-point win over Seville in the second semi-final.

And, on the biggest day of the year, that juggernaut proved unstoppable.

The Eagles’ stunning win gave the club its first senior flag since 1990, a stretch of 28 years that had seen it finish runners-up four times.

Yarra Junction kicked five first-quarter goals to open a handy, though not insurmountable, 16-point lead at the first change.

Another six in the second had the Eagles 42 up at the half.

From there, however, it was one-way traffic as Yarra Junction ran the ball at will and, in a lopsided game of keepings-off, pushed its winning margin out towards three figures.

Tyson Wheeler kicked five goals and Leigh McCombe three but, in the end, Eagles were lining up to score and 10 of the side got their name on the scoresheet.

Picking the obligatory best half-dozen proved a chore but Troy Armstrong, John Holmes and Cameron Hoare were the best of an outstanding bunch.

Armstrong, the game’s dominant bigman by the length of the field, was awarded the best-on-ground medal.

Seville’s James Cecere, Tom Groen and Jack Larkin did their best to throw the sandbags in the path of what was an unstoppable tide.
