The AFL under-16 championships crown has been decided with the very last kick.

With scores level, Vic Country forward Will Malady needed just a behind from a set shot tucked up on the boundary to hand his side victory as the match went into golden point.

The Gippsland Power forward proved to be the matchwinner, sneaking it through for a behind from 30 metres out.

The siren sounded just after Malady’s behind sailed through and he went off, with his teammates running from all directions to congratulate him after the epic come-from-behind win.

SCROLL DOWN FOR SUPERCOACH POINTS AND STATS

Malady also cooly slotting the last goal of the match three minutes earlier after a crucial tackle that won him a holding the ball free kick.

The game appeared all-but over at three-quarter time with South Australia holding a 21-point lead after kicking six goals to Vic Country’s one in the third term.

Vic Country, South Australia and Western Australia were all locked on two wins across their three matches, but Vic Country’s last-gap triumph over South Australia saw them clinch the title on head-to-head.

Malady kicked 2.2 for the match, backing up his promising three-goal outing against Western Australia on Tuesday.

The standout of the carnival was Dougie Cochrane, the son of former North Melbourne and Port Adelaide player Stuart, who took out the U16 championships MVP after another dominant performance.

Shining in the midfield on Tuesday, the 194cm talent Cochrane wowed in defence with his elite ball and poise. The 2026 No. 1 pick contender finished with a 28 disposals, 23 kicks, 11 marks and six rebound 50s and Roos and Power fans will be ruing that he does not qualify for either club as a father-son

South Adelaide talent Angus White turned the tide for his side, leading the Croweaters’ third-quarter charge with three of their six goals in that term.

They were all eye-catching: his first a set shot sailing through from 45m on a tight angle, the second a holding the ball free kick and the third a flying shot from 40m off a step.

Electrifying forward Marcus Prasad kicked three miraculous goals himself for Vic Country, the last of those a cracking snap in traffic kickstarting his side’s fourth-quarter comeback. The Dandenong Stingrays livewire also picked up 15 disposals.

Highly-touted Carlton father-son Cody Walker capped his stellar U16 carnival with 30 disposals, nine clearances and six inside 50s for Vic Country while his teammate Tanner Armstrong’s silky skills and sidestep were impressive as he racked up 30 disposals and five rebound 50s across halfback.

Walker staked his claim as a top pick in the 2026 draft, with his campaign earning him Vic Country's MVP award.

South Adelaide’s Cain Florance kicked two goals and had 20 disposals, while Adelaide Next Generation Academy prospect Jermaine Miller also kicked two majors, including a ripping snap from a tight angle.

Geelong Falcons forward Noah Williams had 14 disposals, six tackles and two goals for Vic Country.

Ethan Herbert, a 197cm big man, shone in the ruck and around the ground for South Australia with 20 disposals, 20 hit-outs and five clearances.

Earlier: Nephew of great, Vic Metro young guns announce themselves

The nephew of a West Coast goalkicking great and a Vic Metro talent capped their strong U16 national championships campaigns in Vic Metro’s 13-point win over Western Australia.

Koby LeCras, whose uncle Mark kicked 441 goals for the Eagles and his father Brent played five matches for North Melbourne, powered WA’s third quarter comeback with three majors.

Up the other end it was Arki Butler who caught the eye shortly after, kicking back-to-back goals to get his side back in the contest.

The second of those was one of the goals of the championships, turning his opponent inside out and bursting away before snapping it through the big sticks.

Butler also gathered 20 disposals and eight marks, kicking seven goals across the championships where he has announced himself as one of the top talents in the 2026 draft crop.

Both Butler and LeCras booted seven goals across their three games in the championships.

Livewire forward Jack Surkitt produced another stellar display with two goals, 15 disposals, four marks and four tackles. He was deserving of more goals but missed a few opportunities, finishing with three behinds.

East Ranges trio Zac Antollenos (20 disposals, 10 marks) and Jordan Knapp (18 disposals, seven tackles and six clearances) and Archie Spencer (17 disposals, five clearances and two goals) were also among the best and had some promising moments.

South Fremantle bull Lucas Robinson capped an impressive showing with a classy last-quarter goal, leading the disposal count with 25 disposals, eight clearances and 1.2.

Leo Steed was another standout for the Sandropers with 23 disposals, eight inside 50s and five clearances.

Tuesday: Blues father-son, Crows NGA light up U16 champs

There were more impressive performances from father-sons and club linked talent at the under-16 national championships as both Victorian sides were defeated by South Australia and Western Australia on Tuesday.

After the sons of Michael O’Loughlin and Jason McCartney shone on Monday, Cody Walker, the son of Carlton high-flyer Andrew, performed strongly for Vic Country on Tuesday.

The exciting midfielder won 26 disposals and a team-high seven clearances in their loss to Western Australia.

The 16-year-old announced himself as one of top talents of the 2026 draft pool earlier in the championships after finishing with 28 disposals and two goals against Vic Metro in June.

A Blues father-son prospect who has spent time in at Carlton, Walker also part of Richmond’s Next Generation Academy zone and made his senior debut for Echuca last month.

Lively small forward Jermaine Miller, tied to Adelaide’s NGA, turned it on with four first-half goals for South Australia in their win over Vic Metro, one of those a great finish at speed from 40 metres on the run.

Miller has strong links to the Crows as the nephew of Adelaide and Carlton legend Eddie Betts and 227-game Crow Graham Johncock.

Eligible Richmond father-son Jack Leys, the son of former Richmond player Brian, showed some good signs with 17 disposals, four marks and a goal.

Another familiar name was arguably the best of the lot for South Australia in Dougie Cochrane, who gathered an equal team-high 25 disposals, six clearances and five tackles for South Australia.

His father, Stuart Cochrane, played 50 games for Port Adelaide and 54 for North Melbourne, meaning Dougie doesn’t qualify as a father-son prospect.

West Australian forward Koby LeCras showed some of the forward craft of his uncle, West Coast goalkicking great Mark, booting two goals – one of those off just a couple of steps from the 50m arc - to go with 11 disposals and six marks.

South Australia dominated the first half against Vic Metro and it was Miller and Cain Florance (three goals) who had a major influence, with Florance launching one through on the run from 50m.

Archie Van Dyk was prominent in the midfield with 25 disposals and four inside 50s while Memphis Webb finished with 21 touches and a goal.

Sandringham Dragons talent Arki Butler was the standout for Vic Metro with 20 disposals, five inside 50s and back-to-back goals in the third quarter, while Jack Surkitt (22 disposals, six marks) was busy and clean with ball in hand in the wet conditions.

Vic Country and Western Australia played out an enthralling first half where every goal seemed to be a highlight.

East Perth forward Lachie McGlade was dangerous for WA with three goals and six inside 50, while Subiaco product Thatcher Simmons slotted a goal on the run from 50m and another classy snap later in the second quarter to finish with two majors and 13 touches.

WA midfielder Lucas Robinson led the way on the inside with 25 disposals, eight clearances, seven inside 50s, seven tackles and six marks.

Gippsland Power livewire Marlon Neocleous provided spark for Vic Country with 16 disposals, four tackles and two goals while his Power teammate Will Malady slotted 3.2 from his nine touches.

Murray Bushrangers defender Tanner Armstrong also collected 23 touches and nine rebound 50s for Vic Country.

The championships continue on Thursday with the Brisbane Lions taking on GWS Giants on Thursday morning followed by the Northern Territory’s clash with Gold Coast.

It comes to a close on Friday with Western Australia facing Vic Metro and South Australia coming up against Vic Country.

MONDAY WRAP: Sons of guns star at U16 champs, full stats

The sons of two memorable footballers put themselves on the radar as players to watch in the next two drafts as the final week of the under-16 national carnival kicked off on the Gold Coast.

James O’Loughlin, the son of Sydney champion Michael, and Aidan McCartney, son of former North Melbourne, Adelaide and Collingwood player Jason, each kicked three goals in the Sydney Swans Academy’s 52-point win over the Northern Territory.

Both part of Sydney’s Academy, McCartney impressed in enemy colours to his father, who is now Greater Western Sydney’s football manager and is also eligible as a North Melbourne father-son prospect in 2026, where Jason played 107 games.

Playing alongside him was another youngster with strong Giants links in Ethan Kingsley, the son of GWS coach and former 170-game Port Adelaide player Adam. Ethan qualifies as a father-son at the Power where Adam was a premiership player.

O’Loughlin, a 2025 draft prospect, was approved to play as an over-age player at the championships after an injury-riddled run, similar to Hawthorn father-son defender Will McCabe in the lead-up to his draft year.

Another father-son in action in the wet-weather triple-header at People First Stadium was Cooper Hodge, the son of four-time premiership Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge, who played the last two seasons of his career at the Lions.

Hodge collected 16 disposals in their loss to Tasmania, who had Tyane Thomas, brother of sacked former North Melbourne player Tarryn, in their side.

These father-sons may have a decision to make in the coming years like Nick Blakey, who chose to join the Swans despite being father-son eligible to North Melbourne.

In the first match between the Sydney Swans Academy and the Northern Territory, twins Guy and William Jenkin impressed with 37 possessions between them for the Swans as Conrad Blackwell-Smith (19 disposals, seven clearances and six inside 50s) won it at the source and Ben Pignatelli finished with three goals and 12 touches.

Northern Territory prospect Ethan Bush, who is eligible for the 2025 draft, was the leading disposal-winner on the ground with 27 disposals and five marks as Gus Trigwell kicked two of the NT’s four goals.

Bailey-Dean Latinis kicked five behinds for the GWS Giants along with 23 disposals, eight inside 50s and six tackles, while Thomas Naujok (25 disposals) and T Wichman (three goals and 15 disposals) also had an impact in their 38-point win over Gold Coast.

For the Suns Archie Hill was prolific with 36 disposals, 27 kicks and 10 rebound 50s, Archie Callinan dominated at the coalface with 27 disposals, 11 clearances and six inside 50s while Harry Heathcote tallied 17 disposals, 10 marks, eight inside 50s and two goals.

In Tasmania’s 35-point triumph over the Brisbane Lions it was Archie Devine who led all comers with 31 disposals, six clearances and five tackles, while Riley Walters kicked three goals form 15 touches.

Baelin Phillips (28 disposals, six marks) and Matthew Owen (27 disposals, six clearances and a goal) were the standouts for the Lions.
