Narre Warren scored the first cross-league bragging rights when it rolled Olinda Ferny Creek by 57 points in their Premier Division clash at the Olinda Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

In the first clash between former AFL Yarra Ranges and South-East Football Netball League clubs, the Magpies bagged nine first-quarter goals to led by 51 points at the first break.

From then on there wasn’t much in it, the Magpies shading the Bloods by a goal over the last three quarters on the way to a convincing 19.13 (127) to 10.10 (70) win.

Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners said his side had caught the Bloods with a little bit more preparation under its belt.

“It’s about the sixth game in a row for us,” he said. “So we’d had good preparation games-wise. It’s held us in good stead.

“It’s a smaller ground and we just changed our side around a bit. I guess they weren’t sure what to expect from us so we got the game on our terms.”

The Magpies boss was particularly pleased with the efforts of Jesse Davies in defence and Nathan Foote in the midfield while Daniel Jackson bankrolled the win with seven goals.

“He’s been showing glimpses of playing some really good footy over the last few years,” Shinners said. “He just needs a bit of confidence. On Saturday we really isolated him against his opponent.”

Michael Collins and Aaron Wilson kicked three each in support while Trent Cody was another to stand out.

Nick Keegan booted three goals for the Bloods while Patrick Seymour and Joshua Rankin did their best.

Meanwhile, Cranbourne scored a 13.10 (88) to 9.13 (67) win over Beaconsfield in the battle of the Eagles at Cranbourne on Saturday.

The home side had been down by 23 points at quarter-time before a big second term got them back in it,

Upwey Tecoma gained a measure of revenge for last season’s 100-point elimination final thumping at the hands of Healesville when it disposed of the Bloods 14.18 (102) to 5.13 (43) at Healesville on Saturday.

Daniel Waters was again outstanding, kicking five goals, while Tom Robinson booted three and was named best on ground.

Shaun Donkin, Liam Daly and Harrison Keeling (three goals) worked hard for Healesville.

Woori Yallock had the weekend off courtesy of the competition bye.
