VICTORIANS will be able to keep a closer eye on their councils thanks to a new website allowing users to compare local government performance.
The Know Your Council site was launched last night and provides detailed records on every metropolitan, regional and interface council in Victoria.
People now have access to information on 66 key indicators including rates revenue, expenditure, missed bin collections and even the number of missing pets found.
Data on roads, maternal and child health, food safety, aquatic facilities and libraries is also available.
Results from the annual community satisfaction survey have formed part of the new resource.
Leader Newspapers was able to test the system ahead of its launch. A search on the City of Darebin reveals the average rate payment per property is $1381 compared to an average $1449 in similar council areas and the state average of $1409.
But the site’s main feature is the ability to compare selected councils.

Residents can choose four councils in one search.
Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins said the new website built on the government’s commitment to improve openness and accountability across Victorian councils.
“For the first time, Victorians will be able to access the details of council performance with the click of a button, and without reading dense annual reports,” Ms Hutchins said.
“The Know Your Council website is all about providing residents with more information and a greater understanding of the work their council is doing.”
The new site will be updated by a team from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and councils can also upload information.
