How to spot animal cruelty and report it

Authorities are hunting a person who allegedly decapitated and bound a kangaroo, leaving it on the side of a popular park.

Council workers made the gruesome discovery during a routine street clean near Victoria Park last week.

City of Ballarat’s staff discovered the deceased eastern grey kangaroo with its upper body lying in the gutter of a suburban city street on August 1.

Disturbingly, the animal — found on Winter Street — had been decapitated and was bound with orange rope.

In Victoria, all wildlife is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975.

It is illegal to hunt, take, destroy, injure or interfere with wildlife and severe penalties apply.

The maximum penalty for hunting, taking or destroying wildlife is $41,305 and up to 24 months’ imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the maximum penalty for an act of aggravated cruelty on any animal is $92,460 and or 24 months’ imprisonment.

The Conservation Regulator has launched an investigation and is appealing to the public for information.

It comes after a spate of animals were found decapitated at Lake Wendouree earlier this year.

Anybody with information about the incident is urged to report it.
