Woolworths has lodged plans to transform a heritage-listed building in Albert Park into a supermarket.

The supermarket giant will set up a convenience-style shop in the former Commonwealth Bank site at 95-97 Dundas Place — if the proposal is given the green light by Port Phillip Council.

Plans for the Woolworths Metro store include uncovering the original 1930s ceiling cornices and ‘market-style’ signage on the outside to blend with the village feel along the shopping strip.

Woolworths Metro general manger Justin Nolan said the 130sq m shop would focus on quality fresh and health food options at affordable prices.

Mr Nolan said stock deliveries would be carefully managed to minimise impact on neighbours, with one bread van and one truck dropping off goods via Dundas Lane each day.

He said staff would have access to a small carpark at the back of the shop.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to bring a convenience and community-minded store to Albert Park, which we believe will meet the needs of local residents,” Mr Nolan said.

“We have taken great care to design the store in a way that is sensitive to the existing village look and feel of the Albert Park area.

“Woolworths Metro Albert Park will be designed to cater for customers looking for food they can either eat now, on-the-go or later, as well as top-ups and emergency shops.”

Mr Nolan said Woolworths would soon start a community consultation process, with further opportunities for the public to comment on the proposal available through Port Phillip Council’s planning process.
