If, like most of us, you developed an obsession with sourdough bread during lockdown, you should probably visit this bakery.

For most Melburnians, the obsession with sourdough started during the COVID-19 lockdown.

But for the team behind St Kilda’s popular Woodfrog Bakery, it started nearly 10 years ago.

Head baker Jarrod Hack opened the Barkly St store in 2012, dishing up a huge selection of sourdough breads, as well as bagels, pastries and baguettes.

The sourdoughs — including olive, pumpkin and fruit loafs — are fermented for 28 hours, giving them a thin caramelised crust.

Perhaps it’s not surprising Woodfrog has been voted the best bakery in Port Phillip by Leader readers as part of the Delicious Local campaign championed by Matt Preston.

People travel from the other side of Melbourne to get their hands on a loaf of the good stuff, baked fresh daily at the St Kilda premises.

There are now 11 other Woodfrog Bakery stores around Melbourne, including in South Melbourne, Toorak, Malvern, Kew, Camberwell, Doncaster, Brighton and Elsternwick.

Woodfrog Bakery is at 108 Barkly St, St Kilda.
