Schools in Bayside have issued a warning to parents after a man allegedly tried to lure a young boy into his van.

The boy was riding his bike to school in Hampton on Friday morning when a man in a white Toyota van pulled up alongside him and repeatedly asked the student if he wanted a ride.

When the boy declined, the man allegedly continued to follow him along Hampton St.

The child reported the incident to the school who notified police.

The man is described as being caucasian in appearance, approximately 40 years old and with a buzz cut.

The incident has prompted a warning to parents to be vigilant.

Parents have been an email urging them to talk to their children about the importance of not accepting lifts from strangers, walking in groups and what to do if they feel unsafe.

A police spokesman confirmed they had received a report about the incident.
