WILD weather struck Melbourne about 2am this morning, with flash flooding, major freeway congestion and delays to train lines causing chaos across the city.
The suburbs were not left unaffected as many regions battled against the impacts of Mother Nature.
There are major delays of up to 30 minutes on the Frankston line and Sandringham line.
The delay is due to earlier lightning strikes in the Melbourne metropolitan area that caused damaged to signal equipment and other trackside rail equipment, and part suspension on the Sandringham line earlier this morning.
Metro Trains have advised commuters to consider taking alternative transport, if it can be arranged.
A fallen tree in Rosebud is the only damage reported on the Mornington Peninsula so far today.
Sorrento SES spokesman David Lammers said the large tree fell across the road at the corner of Jetty and Browns roads.
“The only thing we’ve had reported is a large tree over Browns Rd about half an hour ago,” he said.
“Other than that it’s been fairly quiet.”
Mornington police said they had not received any calls for weather-related incidents.
Frankston SES spokesman Brian McMannis said the unit has responded to about six jobs this morning.
“We haven’t been overly busy this morning but we’ve had a few cases of water leaking through rooves and a couple of trees that have come down in the Frankston area,” he said.
Chelsea SES crews have also been relatively quiet.
The unit’s media liaison Phil Wall said volunteers were called out to just two storm damage jobs in Chelsea and Parkdale.
“I thought with a couple of those big downpours that we’d be having a very busy night and morning, but it seems we were lucky to miss the worst of it,” Mr Wall said.
The first job was after 10am this morning in Glenola Ave, Chelsea where SES members had to sandbag a flooded garage.
About an hour later they attended an Imes St house in Parkdale where a broken roof tile led to a minor ceiling collapse.
State MP for Carrum Donna Bauer shared some striking photos of gloomy skies and lightning bolts at Carrum beach this morning.
A man was taken to the Austin Hospital after his ute collided with a bus in Yarrambat about 10.25am.
Diamond Creek Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Eric Harrison said the ute was travelling south when the man lost control on a corner in the wet conditions, crashing into the bus travelling the opposite way.
Traffic was diverted for an hour as police blocked off one lane.
Sen-Constable Harrison said the ute was extensively damaged, while the bus received minor damage.
