More than 45 per cent of early learning providers in Bayside are exceeding national quality standards, the latest data reveals.
Victorian centres were assessed by the state Education Department and rated in categories including children’s health and safety, physical environment, staffing arrangements, relationships with children and governance.
Each was also given an overall rating from “significant improvement needed” to “excellent”.
Of the 83 providers in Bayside, 38 are exceeding national quality standards.
Thirty-nine were rated as “meeting” standards, two were “working towards” them and four had not been rated yet.

Among the providers at the head of the class was Tulip Street Early Learning Centre, which exceeded standards across all the categories.
Co-owner Mary-Jane Chamberlain said it was one of the few family-owned and operated centres left in the area, and cared for about 60 children a day.
“Some families have been with us for almost 10 years, not having their third or fourth child attend,” she said.
“Our enrolments are all through word of mouth – we don’t even have a website.”
Ms Chamberlain said the first five years of a child’s life was a crucial period, and having access to high quality education and care was vital.
“Parents looking for a service, should visit a number of centres and take note of their ‘gut instincts’,” she said.

“Visit your preferred centre more than once. It’s not just about new equipment and toys.”
Among other Bayside centres to score top marks across all categories were Goodstart Early Learning Beaumaris, St Peters Kindergarten, Goodstart Early Learning Brighton – Cochrane Street and Helen Paul Kindergarten.
Education Department spokeswoman Linh Salisbury said Victoria had the equal highest proportion of early childhood services that were meeting or exceeding national quality standards.
“The overwhelming majority of Victoria’s kindergartens and childcare centres do a fantastic job offering quality early childhood education and care for children,” she said.
