RED HILL kept its double-chance hopes alive with a stunning 66-point win over ladder leader Crib Point in Nepean league on Saturday.
Crib kicked eight of the first 10 goals to rush to a 30-point lead, but stopped.
In a dramatic momentum shift, Red Hill outscored it 13.8 to 0.1 in the second half.
Michael Dillon ignited the Hillmen in the third term with his brilliant clearance and stoppage work, while Harry Larwill kept dangerous Crib Point spearhead Glenn Boyd to just two goals.
Red Hill, fourth, plays third-placed Dromana in the last round this weekend. The winner will get a double chance. Both sides are 13-4.
“Even though it’s the last round of the year, it’s a big round of football,’’ Hills coach Tony Blackford said.
“We all want the double chance.’’
Dromana’s Steve Gaertner fired off 12 goals in the Tigers’ 120-point win over Pearcedale. Jay Williams (4 goals), Ash Waterstone and Daniel Waddell also starred in the whopping 29.23 (197) to 11.11 (77) win.
Gaertner, the former St Kilda-listed big man, was too strong and mobile for his Dales opponents. The battle for fifth spot will go down to the wire.
Rye beat Somerville by 10 points to consolidate fifth spot, but the Demons may need to upset second-placed Sorrento this weekend to remain fifth.
Rosebud, after thrashing Tyabb (with Tom Baker booting seven goals), could snatch a finals berth from Rye’s grasp. The Buds face ninth-placed Devon Meadows in the last round.
Myles Pitt slotted four goals in his first game of the season for Sorrento. The Sharks dispatched Frankston Bombers by 74 points as Pitt, back from overseas, blew out some cobwebs in time for finals. James Hallahan was best-on-ground.
Hastings beat Devon Meadows by 71 points, with Luke Hewitt (5 goals), Dylan Hand (5) and Steve Robb (4) in hot form up forward.
