SCHOOLING is the hot topic in the seat of Sandringham, state election candidates say.
The future of the Beaumaris campus of Sandringham College is the top issue dominating discussion among voters, whether they are for or against a stand-alone high school there.
Labor has pledged to create one, Liberals have said they prefer to keep the current three-college campus system in place, while the Greens and the independent candidate would also be in favour of a new secondary school for the Reserve Rd site.
Held by Liberal Murray Thompson since 1992, the safe seat now takes in more areas of Mentone, Hampton and Highett.

Four candidates have lined up, with Mr Thompson facing off against Labor newcomer Christina Zigouras, Greens candidate Adam McBeth and independent candidate Clarke Martin.
The sheer number of cyclists using Beach Rd on weekends, which some say is akin to a racetrack, is also a local issue of concern.
At the last election, Mr Thompson won easily, with a near 16 per cent margin on a two-party preferred basis required to unseat him.
