Sandringham & District Netball Association: support comes to build indoor stadium

Goldstein federal Liberal MP Tim Wilson has thrown his weight behind a campaign to build a new indoor netball stadium in Sandringham, vowing to do everything he can to secure the cash.

A campaign to build a new $9 million indoor netball stadium in Sandringham is gathering momentum.

Key stakeholders want the two court facility to be built alongside Bayside Council’s planned $11.3 million Wangara Rd outdoor netball precinct.

With works expected to start year, the precinct will replace the ageing outdoor netball courts at Thomas St, Hampton.

Goldstein federal Liberal MP Tim Wilson said he was lobbying both the state and federal governments for funding and “won’t be taking no for an answer”.

He said both governments should split the funding requirements on condition the council’s plan was credible.

“The quality and limited availability of local netball facilities is woeful and embarrassing — young women deserve better, players deserve better, our community deserves better,” he said.

Last week the Leader revealed former Aussie netball captain Kathryn Harby-Williams had backed the campaign.

Mr Wilson said a visit of the Thomas St courts by federal Sports Minister Bridget McKenzie last September was also “an important step” in securing funding.

He credited the council for fully funding the outdoor courts and said it was “reasonable” for them to ask the state and federal governments to “chip in” for the indoor facility.

Sandringham & Districts Netball Association spokeswoman Felicity Frederico welcomed Mr Wilson’s support but said it was time for all decision makers to act.

“It’s quite unreasonable that we are reduced to begging both state and federal governments to find the balance to build the two indoor courts,” she said.

A State Government spokesman said there was currently no funding application for the project but he encouraged the council to apply.

Netball Victoria listed building an indoor facility in Sandringham as one of its high priorities.
