A new business is giving carers of infants lifesaving skills that could be the difference between life and death, a Port Melbourne mum and the founder of Resus My Bub has said.
Shelley Westgarth-Nugent and her husband Warren founded Resus My Bub in April when they saw a gap in the market in first aid and pre-natal classes.
“Being a registered nurse I never thought too much about it because I’m trained, but the first time we had to leave our kids with the grandparents or a babysitter was when I started to think about CPR and first aid,” Mrs Westgarth-Nugent said.
“None of our kids’ grandparents had been trained in it,’ she said.
“I’ve also been around friends whose children have choked and I was able to help them by responding while they sat there helpless and in a panic not knowing what to do.
“They used to say to me, you’re lucky you’re a nurse and know what to do but my response was always, you could learn as well, and be able to do what I do.”

“People have a fear of doing something wrong... but any breath or compressions are better than none.”
Mrs Westgarth-Nugent said most people are scared they might break their baby or toddler’s ribs if they start compressions, but a modified version of adult CPR, with only a few fingers, is a safe technique.
Resus My Bub holds private classes and community group lessons, all with paediatric nurses, midwives or paramedics teaching.
“It’s a daunting topic no one wants to face but we want people to be empowered if they face that situation and know they can’t do anything wrong,” Mrs Westgarth-Nugent said.
