A REAL-LIFE Latter-day Saint has slammed controversial The Book of Mormon as a wildly inaccurate depiction of the church.
But Brighton’s Chris Smith said she wasn’t offended by the biting satire, and ironically it was excellent promotion for the faith.
The former teacher said no-one should take the stage musical, now open, seriously as a reflection of their religion.
“It is very clever, very entertaining, hugely popular,” Ms Smith said.
“I can say it is a pretty inaccurate depiction of the church, and not particularly flattering.
“Strangely enough, it’s an opportunity for people to ask questions, clear up some misconceptions.”

Ms Smith joined the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 25 years ago.
“I wasn’t religious at all, I went along with my sister to learn about it,” she said.
“I prayed, got an answer, had a spiritual experience.
“It is difficult to explain, it was a convincing moment, something I had not felt before.”
The Mormon church was set up in the United States in 1830 by Joseph Smith; there are now 150,000 followers in Australia, with 30,000 in Victoria.
Ms Smith said she had not seen the musical, but had read about it and discussed it widely with others.
She wouldn’t watch it as it didn’t seem to be “wholesome”, or something she would enjoy.

“I don’t think the writers of the show were interested in making any deep statements about religion, their primary concern was to produce a piece of entertainment,” she said.
“However the conclusion from the storyline seems to be that believing in something makes for a better life.
“Any publicity is good publicity, so they say, and I think it will raise the profile of the church and more people will look into what we do.”
