A Melbourne woman has been accused of stealing a $20,000 wig that has been specially made for a young girl with cancer, a court has heard.

Racheal Xerri, 35, faced Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing the expensive wig from Louis Barnett Son in September.

The Clayton South woman was allegedly caught on CCTV, stealing the hair piece while a hooded accomplice waited outside, shop owner Andrew Barnett told the Herald Sun outside court.

Mr Barnett said the young girl who was the intended recipient of the wig was “rather upset” when she learned it had been stolen and there would be several weeks of delay while a replacement was fabricated.

The third generation wig maker said thieves had made off with wigs from their Richmond store before, but never had anyone stolen something meant for a child with cancer.

Mr Barnett said they had managed to make a replacement in short order and the young girl was coming over from Tasmania on Tuesday to pick it up.

Ms Xerri’s case was adjourned without any development to February 2 to proceed alongside other existing criminal matters.

She remains on bail.
