New cases of coronavirus have been detected in Port Phillip overnight, as the number of active cases soars across the state.
Port Phillip has recorded eight new cases of the deadly virus in the past eight days, including three more since July 6 taking the current total to 60.
It follows a lull in the area in recent weeks.
Albert Park state Labor MP Martin Foley said new measures, including an increased cleaning schedule, had been introduced at housing estates in the area to help stop the spread.
It comes as thousands of residents in nine public housing towers in Flemington and North Melbourne were placed under a ‘hard lockdown’ to help stem COVID-19 infections.
“The current spike in coronavirus cases in Victoria is not where we wanted to be and it’s understandable that people are feeling anxious — including the public housing tenants in our community,” he said.
“There has been no virus detected in the local public housing estates in our community (and) it is up to us all to keep it that way.”
Mr Foley said the Department of Health and Human Services had increased cleaning processes at Park Towers, Emerald Hill, Layfield Court and 17 the Esplanade.
“Residents in those communities will notice additional sanitisation services, including more cleaning in common areas,” he said.
Mr Foley said information about coronavirus, including messaging about how to stop the spread, has been distributed to residents in a “wide range of languages”.
“It is more important than ever that we all do what we can to stop the spread of coronavirus to protect ourselves and our neighbours,” he said.
“Keep practising physical distancing, staying at home if you feel unwell, and maintaining good hygiene by regularly washing your hands and coughing into your elbow.
“And if you have any symptoms, no matter how small, get tested.”
The latest DHHS data shows Victoria’s total number of positive cases has jumped to 2824.
To date, 22 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.
The Alfred hospital is the closest testing centre for people living in Port Phillip.
A Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said screening and assessment clinics had been set up across the state to test as many people as possible, with more to be rolled out if necessary.
“We’re working closely with the Commonwealth Government to ensure GPs are also supported in providing advice and screening to potential COVID-19 patients,” he said.
