A Port Melbourne couple who allegedly grew weed in tents and stashed huge amounts of chemicals used to make GHB have been charged with drug trafficking.
Michael Harris and Kira Bunker fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after they were charged by police earlier this year.
The couple were raided by Prahran Divisional Response Unit detectives on February 25 where police allegedly seized 2L of 1.4-Butanediol, more commonly known as ’bute’.
Officers also found several “mature” cannabis plants that the couple allegedly grew in makeshift tents in the backyard.
Police also allegedly seized digital scales and drug paraphernalia before they arrested Mr Harris and Ms Bunker.
They were both charged with trafficking a commercial quantity and possessing a traffickable quantity of 1,4 Butanediol and possessing, cultivating and trafficking cannabis.
1,4 Butanediol is an alcohol compound that has often been linked to sexual assaults and overdoses and is used to make the depressant party drug GHB.
Mr Harris appeared in court via video link from Ravenhall Correctional Centre, while his partner Ms Harris appeared via video link from home while she held a baby.
They will both return to court on July 1, and Mr Harris will remain in custody on remand until then.
