Popular Brighton beach to be stung with second EPA clean up bill

Clearing Brighton’s popular Dendy St beach of toxins found in the sand has already cost $80,000 — but now the EPA has confirmed it will issue another order.

Bayside Council is set to be slapped with yet another costly cleanup notice for a contaminated section of Brighton’s popular Dendy Beach, with works so far already costing ratepayers $80,000.

Cyanide, arsenic, lead, asbestos and other toxic substances were last year found just below the surface at the popular spot, just a stone’s throw from the famous bathing boxes and the Brighton Life Saving Club.

“At the moment, EPA is in the process of drafting a new clean up notice,” southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said.

“EPA continues to work to get a clear picture of alleged contamination issues at Dendy Beach and is in frequent contact with Bayside Council over the issue.”

She also encouraged anyone who witnessed asbestos being dumped to contact them.

Bayside Council has been contacted for comment.

The council closed a section of the foreshore last April after asbestos was found during an archaeological dig, and a cleanup notice — ordering the council to remove waste and manage pollution — was issued in July.

The council has already sunk $80,000 into testing and assessing the site.
