Plans to turn South Melbourne car workshop into break room, axe throwing venue

A former car workshop in South Melbourne could be the perfect place to burn pent-up energy once you’re out of isolation, with plans to turn it into an adult games centre with axe-throwing, golf simulators and more.

A former car workshop in South Melbourne could provide the perfect place to blow off some steam once lockdown is over.

Plans have been lodged to turn the site at 90 and 92-94 Gladstone St into Valhalla, an adult amusement parlour, complete with axe throwing, golf simulators and rooms where visitors can deliberately break things.

If approved, the venue would also include a bar serving drinks and pub-style food.

Named for the mythical hall in Asgad where those who die in combat dwell, Valhalla will feature nine axe throwing lanes, two break rooms, pool tables and pinball machines.

Alcohol will not be served to axe-wielding patrons until their throwing session is finished.

According to the proposal, “break rooms” are the latest craze in indoor entertainment, giving people the chance to smash crockery by hurling it at the wall or whacking it with cricket and baseball bats — while wearing protective gear, of course.

“(It’s) essentially a stress relief mechanism,” the application states.

The rooms would feature double-glazing to prevent noise carrying.

There are only a handful of similar venues in Melbourne, including in Oakleigh and Collingwood.

The centre would be open from 11am to 11pm seven days a week, subject to demand.

Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss said the application was likely to be determined next month.

She said one there had been one objection to the proposal so far, which raised concerns about noise from patrons and activities, waste disposal, and carparking.

The applicant was contacted for comment.
