Phone landlines and internet connections will be switched off to make way for the NBN from next week in seven suburbs.

From February 14, 8266 premises across Bentleigh East, Black Rock, Brighton, Brighton East, Caulfield South, Ripponlea and Ormond will be cut off, with a further 4192 homes and businesses in Brighton and Caulfield East losing access to existing services from March 13.

If your home is affected you should have been notified about 18 months ago, but NBN Co says some residents are yet to make the switch.

Moving to the NBN isn’t automatic and you will need to contact your internet provider about a plan that will meet your speed and data needs.

Head of NBN Local Victoria, Matt Evans, said the changes could affect critical business services which operate on existing landline phone and internet services, including EFTPOS terminals and fire alarms.

Mr Evans said people should call their provider to see if their services would be affected and make the switch.

“It’s particularly important for anyone with a medical alarm, auto-dialler or emergency call button to register these devices on NBN Co’s Medical Alarm,” he said.

“Some devices may not be compatible with the NBN access network so if you or a loved one have a medical device, speak to the device provider and your phone and internet provider as soon as possible to seek further guidance.”

Mr Evans also warned against scammers preying on seniors during the switch.

He said NBN Co did not take money directly from consumers.

“We never make unsolicited calls, request remote access to a resident’s computer or door knock to sell broadband services to the public,” he said.

“If someone claiming to work for NBN Co has contacted you trying to sell you an internet or phone service ask for their details, hang up and call your retail service provider to check if they’re legitimate. If you’ve already provided your details, contact your financial institution immediately.”
