MPD Steak Kitchen opens at Zagame’s Caulfield East
A popular steak house has opened a second venue in Caulfield East with a top chef at the helm. And he’s dished up tips for cooking the perfect steak at home.

Dining options have been beefed up in Caulfield East thanks to the opening of a new steak restaurant.
Serving up exquisitely cooked cuts of sustainably and organically farmed meat, MPD Steak Kitchen Caulfield is the latest venture from the Zagame Group following the success of sister venue MPD Steak Kitchen Berwick.
With executive chef Chris Bonello at the helm, the Caulfield restaurant serves up simple, seasonal dishes influenced by Bonello’s Maltese heritage.
The former Vue De Monde head chef said the restaurant’s Josper grill was the key to cooking up its steaks, sourced from O’Connor Beef, King Island and Cape Grim.
Mayura Station and Sher wagyu are also available.
“When we select a producer to feature on our menu we find out every single detail for the full life span of the animal, from what it eats to what happens right up until it gets delivered to us,” Bonello said.
“That’s the only way to ensure what we are serving the customer is the best it can be.
“Sustainability is a key factor, but we are also always on the lookout for great stories and for what is new to the market.”
Signature dishes on offer include a prawn entree with Maltese toast, steak tartare served with a 63C egg yolk and beef Wellington.
Bonello said seasonal produce was always top priority.
“My family were farmers in Malta, so using produce in season has been ingrained in me from a time when I helped my father harvest crops from the field,” he said.
Those who fancy a tipple won’t be disappointed by the range of quality bourbon and scotch, local craft beers and ciders.
The adventurous cocktail list includes “Melbourne’s most dramatic” espresso martini, topped with liquid nitrogen frozen gingerbread cream in an exciting twist on an affogato, as well as an award-winning Ruby Rose martini.
Sommelier Marcus Radny has hand-selected more than 100 wines from local, sustainable and organic vineyards to create a list that’s designed to match and enhance the flavours of each dish.
