MORDIALLOC Pier will be extended and upgraded to the tune of $3.25 million if the Coalition Government is re-elected in November.
Premier Denis Napthine visited the pier yesterday to announce the election promise, which is aimed at boosting tourism to the area by allowing more recreational fishing on the lengthened pier.
Dr Napthine was joined by Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh and Mordialloc state Liberal MP Lorraine Wreford to make the pledge, which will also include the replacement of wave baffles.
“The community and recreational fishers have been calling for Mordialloc Pier to be upgraded,” Dr Napthine said.
“Mordialloc Pier is a very popular fishing spot but this means it can become overcrowded at times, particularly in summer.
“The Coalition Government is committing $3.25 million to extend and upgrade the pier to allow more room for fishers and families, and to provide safer and more user-friendly facilities.
“This is on top of $1 million we have provided for urgent maintenance works to the pier, which are due to begin next week.”
Ms Wreford said the government had recently investigated wave behaviour which was causing damage to boats moored on Mordialloc Creek, and the $3.25m would help implement the investigation’s recommendation for new wave baffles.
Mr Walsh said by supporting recreational fishing and improving tourist spots like Mordialloc Pier, the Coalition Government was building stronger communities.
