Despite limited capacity due to coronavirus restrictions, a popular St Kilda art show has busted a sales record.
Linden New Art’s annual Postcard Show sold more than $32,000 of mini masterpieces on its opening day on Saturday, December 7.
By the end of the weekend 164 works totalling nearly $40,000 had been bought by savvy art lovers. Last year’s opening weekend saw about $25,000 worth of art sold.
Director Melinda Martin said the opening weekend had been the “most successful ever” in the show’s 30-year history, partly due to the addition of online sales.
“This is fantastic news for the artists as it generates income for a part of the community that has been hard hit by COVID-19,” she said.
Ms Martin said a maximum of 80 people could attend the exhibition each day in line with restrictions.
“(That) resulted in a slightly smaller crowd in the gallery than we would usually have on the opening weekend, however we have been pleasantly surprised by the online engagement with the show, particularly from interstate and regionally-based buyers,” she said.
Ms Martin said for those who physically attended the exhibition, it was a chance to “see art in real life” again.
“The Linden Postcard Show is an iconic exhibition that celebrates creativity and inclusivity (and) it is a testament to the popularity of the show that has it has continued for so many years,” she said.
The show, which features 1000 tiny artworks, is open-entry and attracts artists from across Australia. There is no set theme but all entries must measure 8x10 inches (the size of a postcard).
The Linden Postcard Show runs until January 31, 2021 at Linden New Art, 26 Acland St, St Kilda.
