It has prompted people living near Peter Scullin Reserve in Mordialloc to complain to police about noise and parking issues caused by a steady stream of pokefans.
Moorabbin Proactive Policing Unit Leading Senior Constable Gary Oram said police had been forced to erect a flashing sign warning about illegal parking.
He said Mordialloc police would be increasing their patrols in the area in response to the complaints, and urged locals to “be aware of traffic and potential accidents”.
When Leader visited the area this week there were at least a dozen gamers taking advantage of the zone, popular with gamers because of the presence of three intersecting “Pokestops” — in-game spots where you can get extra items.
Gamers Melissa and Lisa both live near the area, and said it was an incredibly popular spot for Pokemon Go players, with the spot “lured non-stop until 1 in the morning”.
“Every night this week it has been busy,” Lisa said.
“You’ll see them at night parked all along the road and on the grass.”
Melissa said the actions of a few were giving the majority of law-abiding gamers a bad name.
“I get upset when that happens, they’ll ruin it for everyone,” she said.
“For people who don’t understand, I imagine it would be intimidating.”
Police have raised the issue with Kingston council.
City of Kingston Planning and Development general manager Jonathan Guttmann said the council would continue to monitor and patrol local streets to ensure people were parking safely and legally.
