Locals shared images of the white late model Land Rover Discovery partially submerged in the Elwood Canal, not far from busy Glen Huntly Rd.
One user reported the engine of the car was still running but no one was inside.
Images of the vehicle were posted to Facebook around noon on Monday.

The car was found after a night of heavy rain across the city.
The Elwood Canal runs through the City of Port Phillip, and is often subject to flash flooding.
In a local flood guide, the SES said the canal’s water levels can rise rapidly and without warning.
“Flash flooding generally affects small areas but damage can be severe. It occurs after high intensity rainfall (usually associated with thunderstorms) and is short in duration,” the report says.
It’s not the first car to end up in the canal this year, after a suspected stolen car took ended up in the water in September.
A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed the incident, reporting that the car was found in the water without any sight of a driver.
