Home in Koornang Road Carnegie damaged in suspicious blaze

Neighbours have been woken by a huge fire that gutted a home in Koornang Rd, with flames threatening nearby properties.

Fire crews have battled a suspicious house fire in Carnegie overnight, with neighbours evacuated amid fears the flames would threaten neighbouring properties.

Nearby residents are still without water after the fire gutted the Koornang Rd home, with police still at the scene while fire investigators probe the cause of the blaze.

Fire Rescue Victoria responded to multiple triple-0 calls for the fire about 3.08am Friday, and arrived to discover the house fully alight.

A neighbour, who did not wished to be named, said it was an incredibly scary sight.

She said she was woken by fire engines about 3am.

“I came out and saw the house completely engulfed with flames,” she said.

The fire was so fierce the woman feared the house next door, and a laneway that runs alongside the home which features local art work, was also at risk of going up in flames.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Crews immediately called for additional appliances for support, with nine fire trucks with 30 firefighters working hard to prevent the fire spreading to neighbouring properties, bringing the fire under control at 3.49am.

FRV said at this stage, the damaged house appears unoccupied.

Police said no one was home at the time of the fire, but the property suffered significant damage.

Residents nearby were temporarily evacuated with concerns the fire may have spread.

The road between Neerim Rd and Munroe Ave was expected to be closed off for several hours.

The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined but police are treating the fire as suspicious.
