Hampton Rovers raises $190k for Salvos’ Red Shield Appeal

A football club usually measures its success by the number of goals it scores but Hampton Rovers have been kicking goals off the field by raising almost $200,000 for the Salvos.

Scoring on the footy field isn’t the only way Hampton Rovers Football Club players kick goals.

For two decades the Bluff Rd club has raised money for the Salvation Army by joining its annual door knock and tin rattle appeal.

To date the club has raised more than $190,000 for the charity’s Red Shield Appeal.

Rovers life member Bill “Choc” Mirabito said the club hoped this weekend’s appeal would be its biggest collection.

“This year is our 20th year for doorknocking for the Salvos so we are really keen to tip over the $200,000 to celebrate,” he said.

“It’s a credit to the club to be a part of this wonderful cause and we are really looking forward to it.”

This weekend the club will have more than 150 junior, women and senior players, parents and members rattling tins at most Hampton intersections.

“It’s a whole club effort and to have been doing it for 20 years is a really big thing, it’s a fantastic effort for an amateur club to have been doing it this long and to have raised so much,” Mr Mirabito said.

He said they would be at most major intersections between Bluff, Beach, South and Bay roads.

“We will basically cover the whole of the Hampton area, so make sure if you see us, dig deep for the Salvos,” he said.

The Rovers will be doorknocking in the Hampton area on Sunday, wearing their club shirts and Salvation Army official ID.
