Quick-thinking residents saved a St Kilda East home from going up in flames on Friday morning.
Multiple 000 calls reported smoke and flames rising from a bungalow at the rear of a house on Sidwell Ave about 9.40am.
Five pumpers, a rescue unit, an aerial unit and three other units attended, bringing the blaze under control by 10am.
The first FRV appliance arrived on scene at 9.47am, immediately requesting additional resources to fight the fire engulfing the single-storey brick bungalow.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using water lines quickly contained the fire, stopping it spreading to the main house.
There were no occupants in the bungalow at the time of the fire, but four people were evacuated from the main house.
No one was injured.
An FRV spokesman said the fire had not been deemed suspicious.
Investigations into the cause were ongoing.
