A PEDESTRIAN rail crossing that claimed the life of an elderly man in June will be given a $320,000 safety upgrade — if the Coalition Government is re-elected in November.
Minister for Roads Terry Mulder joined Mordialloc state Liberal MP Lorraine Wreford yesterday to promise pedestrian operated signals will be installed near Denman Ave in Edithvale if the Coalition is re-elected at the state election.

Mr Mulder said a further $500,000 would be spent to install automated pedestrian gates at the crossing.
In early July, Mordialloc Chelsea Leader ran a front-page story highlighting the fears of locals about the dangerous crossing and their calls for action after an 85-year-old man was killed while crossing with his bicycle on June 17.
Ms Wreford started a petition calling for improvements to the crossing.
Mr Mulder said of the 21 crashes recorded at the site in the five years to December 2013, three were pedestrian-related.
“The installation of signals will mean that pedestrians will be able to cross the road, which is classified as a Pedestrian Priority Area, at their own pace and in a much safer environment,” he said.
“We know that simple measures such as installing a pedestrian crossing can go a long way to ensuring that everyone, drivers and pedestrians alike, is safer on our roads.”
Ms Wreford said the signals would be installed between Denman Ave and Yarella Ln, and would better connect the existing pedestrian crossing over the Frankston rail line.
“Especially over the warmer months, lots of visitors to the area cross the highway to visit the beach or the Edithvale shopping precinct,” Ms Wreford said.
“They can now do so knowing safety will be improved.”
If the Coalition Government is returned to power, works on the pedestrian railway crossing will start late next year.
