Drunk dad crashed car with kid in back

A smashed father who drove his car into a pole while nearly four times over the legal limit – with his young son in the back seat – has been hit with a big ban and fine. The father had been knocking back booze on the evening of October 16 last year when he got in his car and drove along Clarence St in Elsternwick. He lost control in the wet conditions and hit a power pole. Both the man and his son were taken to hospital, where the man registered a blood sample reading of .180. He wasn’t interviewed until April 15 this year, when he told police he had been drinking “more than I should have”. He then lost his licence. He represented himself in court, saying he was sorry and hadn’t driven since the accident. The magistrate said the father, who had no traffic priors of any kind, and his son were lucky to have not been seriously injured in the crash. He was convicted and fined $2000, and disqualified from driving for 18 months, backdated to April.

Wrong way woman’s traffic tantrum

A woman who ended up in Carnegie after getting on the wrong tram took her anger out on passing and parked motorists, kicking cars and pulling off wing mirrors. The homeless woman was upset at not being able to get to her court date at Moorabbin on the morning of July 16 this year. She asked passers-by how to get to the court venue from Carnegie, but when she was told trams don’t go to Moorabbin she became upset. The 37-year-old walked down the middle of Koornang Rd, with cars weaving around her, before one driver got out and asked if she wanted help. But instead the woman lashed out, kicked the car’s doors and yanked on a mirror before the driver drove off. She then did a similar thing to a parked vehicle. Police came and she was arrested, but she offered no explanation for her bizarre actions. She was given a two-year good behaviour bond and told to continue with her medical health treatment.

An inattentive driver who crashed into a car which then hit a motorcyclist, catapulting him into a trailer, has pleaded for a non-conviction because he wants to become a citizen. The man, originally from Afghanistan, was driving along on Dandenong Rd in Carnegie on March 8 this year when he turned to go down Grange Rd. But he had misjudged the cars slowing down in front of him at the red light, and his car hit the vehicle in front. That car then hit a motorbike, and the rider was knocked into the air, landing in a car trailer. The rider was taken to hospital with slight injuries. The man admitted he had been travelling too close and should have been able to avoid the accident. In court he represented himself saying he wanted to avoid a conviction because it could impact his visa application process. The man, who had no priors, was fined $600, with no conviction recorded.
