Drunk called police as he drove while drinking beers in a fit of rage he couldn’t remember

After smashing up the family home a Bentleigh plumber drove the streets of Caulfield drinking beer and phoning police to issue very chilling warnings.

A Bentleigh plumber pleaded guilty to threat-related offences and drink-driving at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

A man on a violent boozed-up bender ripped doors from their hinges at his home before grabbing stubbies and taking off in his van.

Already drunk, Christopher Wain downed beers as he drove around Caulfield calling cops, telling them he was going to stab someone, run people off the road and ram his van into their station.

Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court heard Wain was on a violent boozed-up bender when he rampaged through his family home on November 9 this year.

The Bentleigh 46-year-old arrived home from work about 6pm and an argument began with his wife.

He became verbally and then physically aggressive, pulling the dining room door off its hinges and smashing a window before leaving the house.

He got in his van and left, drinking beers as he drove away towards Caulfield.

He called triple-0 and said “there will be a stabbing and a murder” before hanging up.

He then called Caulfield police directly, saying he was “going to run people off the road” and that he would “ram the front doors of the police station”.

Officers caught up with him on Hawthorn Rd and tried to intercept him, but he didn’t stop and accelerated away onto North Rd.

He almost collided with another car before locking up his wheels and skidding onto a median strip near Sussex Rd.

He was then arrested and sent to hospital for a mental health assessment.

He was breath-tested and blew .162 – more than three times above the legal limit – but said he had no recollection of what had just happened.

Wain pleaded guilty to threat-related offences and drink-driving at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

In court his defence lawyer said Wain, who runs his own plumbing business, suffered severe depression and anxiety and was “drinking a six-pack a night”.

His lawyer said that at the time his life was “a pressure cooker”, and the argument with his wife was “the final straw”.

He said he was contrite, hadn’t drunk alcohol since and was now on a mental health care plan.

Magistrate Charles Tan said Wain’s alcohol abuse and the seriousness of his offending were concerning public safety issues.

He ordered Wain be assessed for a community corrections order, with an emphasis on alcohol treatment, and he will be sentenced at a later time.
