AN EMOTIONAL anti-violence video honouring one-punch victim David Cassai will become an educational tool on the impacts of one-punch attacks.

The 22-year-old was fatally hit in Rye in an unprovoked attack in the early hours of December 31, 2012.

“STOP. One Punch Can Kill” campaigners and close friends of David, Vincent Petrilli and Jack Wright, have made a documentary, The David Cassai Story, to raise awareness of the consequences of one punch.

The moving 10-minute video, which features heart-wrenching interviews with Mr Cassai’s mum, sisters and friends, has had more than 30,000 hits on Facebook and YouTube in less than three months.

The group has also made a 30-second Christmas video, which features David’s mum, Caterina Politi, visiting her son’s grave urging people to think before they act.

She said she wanted young people to take responsibility for their own actions and not depend on others to look out for them.

“You do not want one friend living with the guilt that he could not save you because you were out being an idiot,” Ms Politi said.

“That is a huge responsibility to live with for the rest of their life if they were in charge or the responsible one.

“Know that senseless actions can destroy lives and you can destroy your own life.”

Ms Politi cannot watch the video but said knowing the campaign’s message about the devastating impacts of one punch was being widely received made it worthwhile.

Thomas Francis McCluskey-Sharp, 26, was last week jailed for two years and three months for his role in a brawl with Mr Cassai’s friends that fatal night.

Earlier this year, the “STOP. One Punch Can Kill” movement successfully petitioned the Victorian Government to introduce a new Coward’s Punch Manslaughter law which has a 10-year minimum.

The group will also continue to campaign their one-punch message at high schools and footy clubs in 2015, educating young people, particularly men, about the trauma of one punch.

Mr Petrilli said people had a responsibility to look after themselves while bringing in the new year.

“By all means go out and have fun but there is no excuse for being violent,” Mr Petrilli said.

“We have a duty of care to our mates and we have the power to prevent a situation from escalating.”
