Cases by region: Glen Eira revealed as a coronavirus hot spot in Victoria

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Glen Eira climbed over the Easter long weekend but there were no new cases in the area recorded yesterday. Across Victoria there has been an increase of 8 confirmed cases overnight.

Data reveals there have been 46 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Glen Eira recorded to April 15.

The figure dropped one from 47 after clarification on the address of someone who has tested positive overnight to April 14.

Stonnington still tops the state with 88 cases, while Banyule has risen to 80 and Boroondara is now at 60.

The latest Department of Health and Human Services data shows Victoria’s total number of positive cases jumped to 1299 – an increase of 8 overnight.

To date, 14 people have died as from the coronavirus.

A recent amendment to the current stay at home directions allows another person to come to your house to look after your child if you need to go out for one of the four essential reasons, or if you are working or studying at home.

A parent may also drop your child at another person’s house to be looked after, while you are out – if it is for one of the four listed reasons.

In recent weeks there were reports of large groups of people “standing shoulder to shoulder” at Princes Park in Caulfield South and sport and fitness training session.

And outraged residents had taken to social media, calling for tougher lockdown laws as warnings to stay home — or at least keep your distance — are ignored.

With parks, outdoor gyms and playgrounds now closed police and councils are call for people to do the right thing.

Port Phillip Inspector Nigel McGuire-White said police were focusing on educating people before slapping them with fines.

“We’ve taken an education role (so far) but we’re also really clear that if we get the indication people are deliberately placing others at risk, we will take action on that.

“We really need people to be compliant with the government’s directions around social distancing because … it will save lives.

“We need people to understand if you’re not following that you’re putting yourself and your family at risk.”

Insp McGuire-White said he had hoped to see a drop in the area’s overall crime as people got the message to stay home.

He said police were still conducting regular patrols of the area and were now armed with face masks and hand sanitiser as well as their usual protective equipment.

The Alfred hospital is the closest testing centre for people living in Port Phillip.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said screening and assessment clinics had been set up across the state to test as many people as possible, with more to be rolled out if necessary.

“We’re working closely with the Commonwealth Government to ensure GPs are also supported in providing advice and screening to potential COVID-19 patients,” he said.
