Bunnings research reveals latest trend in isolation DIY projects
Melbourne is in the midst of a DIY frenzy as people flock to Bunnings stores to snap up supplies for home renos they’ve been putting off for years. And a gardening job to block prying eyes seems to be at the top of the to-do list.

Spending more time at home has a sparked a DIY frenzy, with people finally getting around to doing the odds jobs they’ve been putting off since moving in.
Independent research commissioned by Bunnings revealed gardening had bloomed during the COVID-19 lockdown with people keen to get their little patch of outdoors up to scratch.
And it seems screening ourselves off from the neighbours is top of many gardening schedules.
The most watched online DIY guide from Bunnings so far is their video on the 10 fastest growing plants for privacy.
Bunnings’ national greenlife buyer Alex Newman said there had been an increase in popularity across all plant types during past month.
“Seedlings and seeds have been in demand and we are working with our suppliers to increase supply and replenish our stocks, as soon as they become available,” he said.
The research also showed 65 per cent of Australians had at least one unfinished Do-It-Yourself job to do at home, while two in three (64 per cent) were tackling DIY tasks once a month.
Gardening, decluttering and painting are at the top of the agenda.
When the Leader visited the Hawthorn and Mentone Bunnings stores this week the aisles were full of social-distancing DIY-ers.
A staff member at the Hawthorn store said it had been “crazy”.
“People are at home now and finally have time to do the things they never quite get around to,” she said.
“Or there’s a crack in the wall they’ve never noticed before but now they're sick of staring at it all day while they’re working.”
Michael, from Laverton, said he made about six trips to Bunnings each weekend to pick up “bits and bobs” for odd jobs he finally had time to do.
To help people nail their DIY projects, Bunnings has create a series of online videos — from how to fix a hole in a plaster wall to a step-by-step guide to installing a wall shelf.
The new Instagram series DIY Live focuses on affordable and simple projects, kids’ activities and Q & As.
Bunnings has partnered with popular home and lifestyle creators and Bunnings DIY team member experts for the series, which includes gardening and landscaping advice with former contestant of The Block Dale Vine and trash to terracotta upcycinlg with Geneva Vanderzeil.
