DEDICATED and down-to-earth, Emily Ryan is a track and field superstar aiming for the top.

The Beaumaris 13-year-old has just been selected to compete at the Australian Little Athletics Championships after a stellar showing at the recent Victorian titles.

Last month she won the state shot put and the discus, and came third in the javelin.

Mother Katie Ryan said it was her daughter’s desire to be the best she could be that motivated her, training in rain, hail or shine.

“What makes Emily unique is she is not your stereotypical thrower; she is a thin, fit looking girl,” Ms Ryan said.

“As a smaller athlete in her chosen field she needs to work greatly on her technique, as her technique is what makes her win.

“Her commitment and dedication to her athletics is proven in her results, as she is the girl nobody expects to win.”

She said Emily has been very lucky to be successful for a long time.

“However, this has never changed her sportsmanship or ego,” she said.

“She is always encouraging her teammates in both basketball and athletics.

“Never has she been pulled up as a bad sportsman.”

Emily is a junior Leader Local Sports Star.

Medallists will be named in seven categories including juniors, teams, individuals, and encouragement.

The program is now a national celebration, and junior category winners will be judged for national awards.
