Bayside schools given almost $30 million by state government

An almost $30 million investment into Beaumaris Secondary College and Sandringham Secondary College will allow one to almost double in size by 2022, and another to build new facilities. But one school has missed out again.

Two Bayside schools have received crucial financial injections which will allow one to almost double in size by 2022.

Beaumaris Secondary College is set to receive a boost of almost $19 million from the state government, while Sandringham Secondary College will get $10 million.

The huge windfall for Bayside’s newest school provides the shot in the arm it says it needs to increase its capacity from 650 students to 1,100 in 2022.

Beaumaris Secondary College principal Debbie Chavez said the funding is a further endorsement of the amazing teaching and learning that happens at the school.

“We are so excited to share the news with our school community that we will be allocated $18.9 million in the education-jobs blitz program,” she said.

“This project will begin this year and ensures that students will have continued outstanding facilities as they move through their senior years.”

Meanwhile, Sandringham Secondary College will invest its freshly minted $10 million cheque into a series of infrastructure upgrades and improvements.

It will build a new gymnasium, new music facilities, a new canteen and upgrade amenities at its Holloway Road Campus.

Member for Southern Metropolitan Enver Erdogan said the investments come as a continued push to make Victoria the education state.

“The ideas and lessons that start inside a classroom are all the more successful when developed within buildings that reflect modern learning environments,” he said.

“Just as we’re facing an unprecedented health challenge, we’re facing an unprecedented economic challenge too. This project will support Victorian jobs in our construction industry.”

But local state member for Sandringham Brad Rowswell said while the near $30 million investment across the two schools was important, Mentone Girls’ Secondary College was in dire need of a funding injection but had been left high and dry.

“Funding announced for Sandringham College and Beaumaris Secondary College is a great win for those school communities and will greatly benefit thousands of local students for many years to come,” he said.

“It is a reminder of what we can achieve when we unite as a community for the benefit of all.

“When I committed $9 million of funding in 2018 to Sandringham College, I did so because I firmly believe every Victorian students deserves a world-class education in world-class facilities – no matter their postcode. I still believe this today.

“I will continue to support and advocate for Sandringham College to receive the staged funding that it requires to totally rebuild the school.

“I will also continue to fight for Mentone Girls’ Secondary College who have not received a cent of state funding for major building works for the better part of three decades.”
