BAYSIDE Council has knocked back a controversial plan for a liquor license at their planned Dendy St Beach Pavilion.

Patrons of the sweeping architect-designed complex, to incorporate a new life saving club, 60-seat cafe, multipurpose room and kiosk, will not be able to enjoy a beer or wine there when it is built next year.

A slew of vocal Bayside residents and social media commentators posters had railed against plans for a liquor license for the new building.

They wanted it to stay a dry zone, and argued a licence would encourage drunken behaviour, noise, and represented “commercialisation” of Dendy Beach.

Bayside chief executive Adrian Robb said while there would be no council-sanctioned booze license, future tenants of the cafe would be free to apply if they wanted to.

“Any future liquor licences would be specifically tailored to the activities of the tenants as agreed by council as the landlord and this would only be achievable through public application for a planning permit through planning and liquor licence processes,” Mr Robb said.

Bayside Mayor Alex del Porto said the new $8 million project, which also involves car park, stormwater and rain garden works, would help to ensure Dendy Beach’s iconic location could be safely enjoyed now and into the future.

“The existing lifesaving facility is in a poor state of repair and does not meet the club’s needs in relation to their critical work in ensuring the safety of swimmers over the busy summer months,” Cr del Porto said.

“The proposed building will provide not only space for the lifesaving club to work and train but will provide important new public amenities for visitors to the beach.”
