Basset Hounds set to walk next to Melbourne’s iconic Brighton beach bathing boxes

They have the long droopy ears and the sad eyes — but those eyes will be smiling at the autumn’s Melbourne Basset Hound Walk.

More than 20 basset hounds are set to have their day at the beach.

The group Melbourne Basset Hound Walks hosts four official events a year for the special breed with the next big gathering on Sunday, April 10, at the Brighton beach bathing boxes

Organiser Julie Hill said the walks were a welcome opportunity for basset hound lovers and owners to join forces for an afternoon of fun and frivolity.

“We are open to all people joining us for the event,” she said.

“You don’t have to own a basset hound to enjoy the day.”

While some basset hound owners also bring their other dogs along, Ms Hill said the day was focused on the long eared, gooey eyed pups.

“We normally have about 20 basset hounds attend,” Ms Hill said.

“We even have some long haired basset hounds in our group, so it is exciting to see the rare breeds out and about with the others as well.”

“It’s always a really fun day, and a great way to bring a smaller community of people together for something enjoyable, especially after Covid.”

Alongside the walk, the basset hounds also put their paws to work in a race to see who is the quickest of them all.

“It’s nothing serious,” Ms Hill said.
“The dogs enjoy it as much as we do. They’re running towards their owners for a scratch and a treat, with people cheering them on.”

This will be the last Basset Hound walk before winter begins.

A photographer will be on hand to capture all the action, with the action starting at 1pm.
