AN Aspendale mum has joined an army of drivers who are taking to local roads to offer safe transport for women and children.
Writer Sioban Vignali is now part of Shebah’s Melbourne workforce, joining the Australian-first company, founded by single mother-of-four George McEnroe, after looking for casual work between sporadic arts-based jobs.
“As a legitimate driver I can pick up kids from after school care and drop them to nanna’s house,” Ms Vignali said.
“I thought, ‘what a fantastic thing for working mothers’; to be able to have other women like myself take care of those sorts of responsibilities.”
Shebah drivers accept female passengers of any age, primary-aged children and teenage boys up to 18 years old when they’re accompanied by a female guardian.
It is designed to make passengers and drivers feel safe and supports charities who support women.
Drivers keep 85 per cent of the fare, one per cent goes to charity and Shebah keeps the rest.
Ms Vignali said other women looking for part-time, flexible work should give driving for Shebah a go.
“We really need more drivers in this area as the word about Shebah gets out,” Ms Vignali said.
“It’s a great feeling as you know that even though you are in your own car, there’s a cheer squad of other women driving right alongside you.”
