A man has died after being electrocuted while pruning a dead tree in front of a Malvern East property.

Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) is investigating the tragic accident which happened on Saturday morning on Waverley Road.

It is believed the tree was clear of powerlines before the incident took place and the man was most likely electrocuted after he made contact with the powerlines through a pole.

His death prompted ESV to urge Victorians to ensure they hire qualified and experienced arborists, who had the right equipment for the job when trimming and pruning trees near powerlines.

The incident was also an important reminder that when using ladders, poles and other equipment near powerlines, people need to be aware of their surroundings, ESV Commissioner Marnie Williams said.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s heavy machinery, a ladder or a pole, any contact with powerlines can result in serious injury or death as we saw over the weekend.”

“This loss of a life is an unfortunate, but very important, reminder that all Victorians need to be aware of the dangers of powerlines.”

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.”
