POSTERS placed along Chapel St by a white power neo-Nazi group have been labelled “deplorable” and a “virulent strain of homophobia”.

The posters, which promoted a so-called “Happy AIDS Month” and stated “gays are a walking disease”, were posted along Chapel St between Malvern Rd and High St on Saturday.

The offensive material was condemned by multiple groups including the Victorian Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby.

Lobby co-convener Emma Halliday called the posters “rubbish” which “belongs in the bin”.

“The LGBTI community is strong and proud we will continue to enjoy Chapel St and its rich gay culture,” Ms Halliday said.

“LGBTI locals and visitors should take heart in the fact that almost 80 per cent of people in the area voted yes to marriage equality.

“I urge anyone who comes across this type of material to report it to their local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Liaison Officers.”

Jewish organisation Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dvir Abramovich also condemned the offensive propaganda.

“There should be no room in Victoria for such contempt and hatred by a neo-Nazi group which is determined to vilify our diverse and vibrant LGBTIQ community, and send a message of fear and intimidation,” he said.

“These kinds of deplorable attacks will certainly shake many to the core and warrant priority response from the police and government.

“It is also a grim reminder that unchecked bigotry and incitement can ultimately lead to violence.

“Unfortunately, over the last few years we have seen a surge in racist rhetoric and white-supremacist activity across our nation, and we call on all good people to stand together and to say that we can turn back this dangerous tide.”
